Navigating Customs: Simplifying the Complex

Aug 13, 2024

Customs matters. Fun? Not exactly. Easy? That’s our job as a freight forwarder. In this blog, we aim to shed light on the often complicated world of customs regulations in import and export.

As a freight forwarder, Berkman Forwarding is a key link in the logistics chain. Not only do we arrange the transportation of your goods, we also handle the essential customs formalities that go hand in hand with international trade. Behind the scenes, our teams work hard every day to ensure these processes run smoothly and without delays.

That’s no small task—terms like AEO, Direct Representation, HS codes, and VGM may sound unfamiliar to most, but they are part of our daily routine. Let’s break them down.

  • AEO: Trusted and Certified
Berkman was one of the first Dutch forwarders to receive an Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) certificate. This certification recognizes us as a reliable partner for handling customs formalities and proves our compliance with strict safety, security, and financial standards.

  • Direct Representation: Acting on Your Behalf

When you work with a forwarder, Direct Representation comes into play. This means Berkman is authorized to act on your behalf during customs procedures. However, the importer/exporter always remains legally responsible for the customs and fiscal consequences. That’s why choosing a trusted partner is essential.

  • HS-codes: The Language of Trade

HS codes (Harmonized System codes) are the backbone of international trade. They classify goods, determine duties and taxes, and identify whether permits or certificates are required. Providing the correct HS code is the importer’s responsibility, but as your representative, we can advise and ensure accuracy.

  • Customs declarations: Your Obligations, But Our Concern

In shipping, customs means more than just showing your passport to the customs agent at your local airport. Customs regulations are constantly evolving, with new requirements added every year. For importers and exporters, it can feel like navigating a maze. That’s where we step in. At Berkman, our team of trained customs handlers brings expertise and up-to-date knowledge, whatever kind of cargo you're shipping.

Whether you’re new to international trade or a seasoned importer/exporter, we provide guidance and peace of mind in the complex logistics world we operate in. Need advice on customs matters? That’s our specialty, and we’re here to help.
